Glossary of terms
The Resource Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS) grew out of a need to somehow standardize fees for medical practices.
After much debate and refinement, the RBRVS was created through an addition to the Social Security Act. This process began shaping the RBRVS as we know it today. Using these two books and the formulas contained within, it is possible to determine fees for any practice, in any locality. Because the forces that created the RBRVS are constantly changing, the RBRVS does as well. It is important to keep one of these books handy as they allow the practice to determine their fees in issues regarding Medicare as well as many private payors.
